Want a New Website? We'll Develop a Website that You can Maintain

You want a new/replacement website?
But these questions - or ones very much like them - are at the forefront of your mind?
You are through with "static" websites which never change, and seem to go "out of date" almost overnight? But you simply can't afford to always have someone on staff - or on contract - to keep your website up-to-date for you?And you yourself simply don't have the time, inclination or even the skill to build the sort of website that you really want for yourself? But you worry that if you don't build it yourself, how are you possibly going to know how to change it yourself?

Latest Article Footer

Been a while - but I just wanted to highlight the very latest generalized article footer, by posting to the Blog.

The latest footer includes all 72 Social Network icons, but most are hidden behind a 'click to show' link so that your page will look clean and minimalist. 3 icons - facebook, MySpace and twitter - are always on display, but you can easily switch those in the HTML for any icons that you wish. It also includes icon links to Printer-Friendly and Send to a Friend, plus a simple icon display for posting or reading comments, with a different icon if Comments already exist.

Additionally there is a PermaLink link (Pro_News doesn't change the links in the way that some other systems do, but the presence of a PermaLink helps to reinforce that). And the very latest addition is a link to the QR 2D Code for the page as an alternate to the PermaLink.

DragonflyCMS Templates

As some of you may be aware, with Pro_News I've pushed the Dragonfly Template system, a variant of the SMARTY system in PHP I'm led to understand, pretty far.

I've templated pretty much everything, except repetitive lists. You might be surprised to learn that I've even added templates to the Submit Article Input screens. The reason is that you can then easily customise those Submit Article screens to remove any unneeded input fields for certain classes of users.

But slowly I discover other things which can be accomplished in the template system. Although unfortunately inserting comments isn't one of them, so the process is a slow one.

But I thought you might be interested in a new template which I've built for my own use, which adds an active graphic. Active in that it is generated entirely within the template based on 2 supplied values.

It even has an extra flourish when the goal amount is reached/exceeded!

Deep User Menu Levels

I hate menus. I like what menus do, keep access to a large array of selections in a small neat package. But I hate how those menus are usually used.

All Those Social Network Icons

So of course I now need a 2nd blog entry in order to demonstrate the new dynamic links.

It never ends!

OK, I've a little time to make this into a real entry!

layingback Store Opening

Yes, you read that correctly, I'm opening a small template store here at layingback.net.

The Template Exchange concept never really worked out, so I'm closing that forum. [ At least I don't have to archive the 0 themes which have accumulated there! ]

I'm a long time supporter of RMS (Stallman) and his GNU GPL2 and later, so rest assured that Pro_News is and will remain F/OSS: Free Libre Open Source Software. And staying with GPL2 until or unless DragonflyCMS goes GPL3. But in the meantime I need some coin to rub together, so I have come up with additional themes myself.

Demo of the "Featured Content" Slider

A screen shot of the final version of the (future) Featured Content Slider is on the left, but you can test out a live version in the demo below. (Click read more to view.) This Slider was created by simply selecting a Photo Album, as previously, and using a brand new template. No changes to the Submit Article user interface at all. Now, instead of the Photo Album images appearing as separate images on the page as before, they appear in a single Slider. No formating or anything else special for the submitter to do!

Featured Content Template

As any of you who've been following will know, I wanted to add a "Featured Content" like display into Pro_News. (If you don't know what I mean by Featured Content, then do a search on DragonflyCMS for the post by greenday2k, or take a look at the original developers Dynamic Drive.)

Anyway, I've got it working, see screen capture alongside. Note this is ENTIRELY done in Pro_News template, no change to Pro_News code at all. A strong vindication as to the power of Pro_News templates!

Pro_News 3.1 Now Available to Sponsors & Members

Just to let everyone know that the latest and greatest Pro_News is now available, initially just for Sponsors, but now for all Registered Members

A lot of small but useful enhancements mostly, the sort of thing which makes building and running the site easier, even if you can't actually put your finger on exactly what changed. Most every annoyance I found when building Pro_News centric websites have been addressed, all minor though I must say, along with all the enhancements requested.

Plus the Submit Article screen has been made much more approachable.

Pro_News Updated to 3.0.0.1

Please update to the latest release. v3.0.0.1 fixes an issue with display on the Home page if multiple Sections are used with differing templates. Unfortunately an error crept into to the 3.0 release just before release, when adding "No Article" error messages for Admins. The new release totally changes and improves the method used to display multiple templates on the same page, to prevent the display issues.

Announcing Pro_News Sponsors' Forum

This is to announce a new forum dedicated to a group of members who have gone out of their way to help bring Pro_News to the community. Either by extensive testing, writing code, translating, or donating funds to help me develop Pro_News. In many cases these members have done most or all of the above.

This new forum is my way of saying thanks to these individuals. In the forum I'll be providing some snippets on how I use Pro_News, and few tricks to get the very best out of a Pro_News based website.
